Love Talisman Ethics: What He He Fulu Can and Cannot Do

Editorial note — This article explains the love-and-harmony talisman (合和符, he he fu) in the Maoshan (茅山) tradition we follow, and it sets one boundary without hedging. A talisman must never be used to control, bind, or manipulate another person. It is for your own state, your own clarity, and the harmony of a relationship you are already in. We make no claim to change anyone’s feelings or choices.

The most important thing this article says

Start here, because everything else depends on it. A love talisman cannot make a specific person love you, return to you, leave someone else for you, or stay against their will. That is not a limitation we are apologizing for — it is the actual position of the tradition, and it is the only position we will sell from.

Any seller who promises to bind a named person to you, to “bring him back,” or to “make her obsessed” is describing manipulation. We do not draw that, and we will not talk around it. Free will is not something a piece of paper overrides.

What he he fu actually is

A fulu (符箓, written talisman) is a hand-drawn ritual script. The harmony script — he he fu (合和符, “harmony talisman”) — is named for the idea of things fitting together well: he (合) and he (和) both carry senses of joining and accord. In folk usage it belongs to the love-and-relationship family, alongside scripts for general harmony and for support from others.

Notice the vocabulary. It is about accord and balance, not capture. That is the tradition’s own framing, and it is why the honest use of this script is inward and relational rather than controlling.

What it can do — and this is the whole list

Kept to its real scope, a love-and-harmony talisman is a ritual expression of intention. It can serve as:

  • A steadying object for your own state — a reminder to be the kind of partner you want to be, held somewhere you see it.
  • A focus for patience — a marker that you are choosing generosity and calm in a relationship, on the days that is hard.
  • A companion to an honest conversation — something you keep near you when you sit down to speak plainly with a partner.
  • A marker of hope for a single person — an expression of an intention to be open and ready, not a claim to summon a particular someone.

That is it. It does not alter another person’s mind, and it does not create a connection that is not already there.

What it cannot do

Being clear about this protects you from anyone selling wishful thinking.

  1. It cannot make a specific person fall in love with you.
  2. It cannot bring back an ex who has chosen to leave.
  3. It cannot make someone leave their current partner.
  4. It cannot force attraction, contact, or a reply.
  5. It cannot fix a relationship that two people are not both willing to work on.

A principle that sits behind this: harmony between two people only exists where both are free to choose it. Anything that removes that freedom is not harmony — it is a bond, and the tradition does not treat that as a good to be wished for.

When a harmony script is appropriate

It fits particular situations and not others, and knowing the difference is most of the ethics.

Good fits

  • You are in a committed relationship and want to bring more patience and steadiness to it.
  • You and a partner have drifted and you want to approach each other with care.
  • You are single and want to feel open, grounded, and ready rather than bitter or closed.
  • You want a ritual anchor for the person you are trying to be in love.

Not appropriate

  • You want a specific named person who has not chosen you.
  • You want to break up another couple.
  • You want to make someone dependent, jealous, or obedient.

If your intention falls in the second list, we will decline the order. That is not a moral flourish; it is simply what the script is not for.

Truthfulness in the wording of any intention

If you keep a harmony talisman, the tradition suggests you state your intention honestly when you receive it. An honest statement sounds inward — “May I be patient and clear in my relationship” — not outward and controlling. The wording is not a spell; it is you naming what you actually want to be responsible for. If you cannot say the intention without aiming it at someone else’s will, the intention itself is the thing to reconsider.

We send a written ritual record with each consecrated piece, so the intention we draw around is on paper rather than implied.

Practical placement

Keep it simple, and keep it yours.

  • On your person or near your bed — a pouched talisman in a wallet or on a nightstand suits an inward, personal script.
  • In a shared home — you do not need to display it. A closed drawer is entirely fine, and if a partner is uncomfortable with the practice, respect that.
  • As a pair with a partner’s piece — some couples both keep a script, but only if both have freely chosen to. Never place one on someone who has not agreed.

Choose between a Love and Harmony Talisman for the relationship theme and a Noble Helper Talisman if what you actually want is warmth and support from people generally rather than romance specifically. If you are drawn to a larger set, our Love Ritual Package groups related scripts.

One caution about keeping a pair. If a partner has not agreed to any of this, keep your own piece and leave theirs alone. A shared ritual is only shared when both people choose it. Putting a talisman into someone else’s bag, room, or pocket without their knowledge is exactly the manipulation this article rules out — it does not matter that the intention feels loving to you. Consent is the whole of the ethics here, and it applies to small gestures, not only to obvious ones.

If a relationship ends despite everything, that is not a failure of the script or of you. People separate for reasons a ritual was never designed to hold. The honest role of a harmony talisman is to help you stay decent and clear through that, if it happens — not to prevent another person from choosing their own life.

A boundary that is not therapy

One more line worth stating plainly. None of this is therapy. If a relationship or a breakup is hurting you in a way that is not lifting, a talisman is not the tool for that — a counselor, a friend, or a doctor is. A ritual can accompany real support; it should never stand in for it, and we would rather say that than let a piece of paper take the place of help you need.

Each talisman we make is hand-drawn in cinnabar (朱砂, zhu sha) on ritual yellow paper (黄纸, huang zhi) and consecrated before shipping.
